HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WVNS) -- Tuesday marks 47 years since Marshall University lost 75 members of the their Thundering Herd football team in a plane crash while returning home from a football game.
The crash happened back in 1970 when the football team was returning to Huntington after a game at East Carolina. The plane never made it back to Tri-State Airport, crashing into a hill- just short of the airport.
Today, hundreds of people are expected to are gather on campus for the 47th Annual Memorial Fountain Ceremony to honor and remember the those who lost their life in the tragic plane crash. The ceremony is taking place at Marshall's student center and starts at Noon.
The key note speaker will be the grandson of two of the 75 people who lost their life in the crash. During the ceremony the water is turned off and will remain silent until spring.
