West Virginia native and author, Homer Hickam, confirmed with 59News on Wednesday that his home in the U.S. Virgin Islands was directly hit by Hurricane Irma. Hickam's home on St. John called Skyridge suffered severe damage after Irma ripped through the island.
He said he wasn't at the home at the time of the hurricane.
Hickam released this statement:
"We are glad that all our friends and neighbors survived. We're sorry that our house has been destroyed but we intend to rebuild."
Homer Hickam is from McDowell County and is best known for his book "Rocket Boys", which inspired the movie "October Sky".
