UPDATE: Identity released of 73-year-old killed in crash

UPDATED STORY 9/15/2017

Raleigh County Deputies released the identity of the person who died in a crash on Route 3 on Monday. Officials said Benjamin Paynter, 73, of Wyoming County was killed. Deputies say a truck driving on Route 3 in Raleigh County crossed the center line and hit an SUV head-on with two people inside. A passenger of one of the vehicles is still in the hospital.

RALEIGH COUNTY, W. VA. (WVNS) -- Raleigh County Deputies are investigating a fatal crash in the Metalton area.

Deputies said a truck driving East on Route 3 crossed the center line and hit an SUV head-on with two people inside of it.

The driver of the truck, who was the only person inside, was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the SUV, a 73-year-old from Wyoming County, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was flown to Charleston where they remain in critical condition.

No names are being released at this time until all family is notified.

No criminal chages have been filed at this time.

Dispatchers in Raleigh County tell 59 News there was a fatal accident on Harper Road in the Metalton area.

It happened at around 5:30 p.m. Monday. At this time we are working to confirm the number of fatalities.

The Raleigh County Sheriff's department is investigating the incident.
