One of West Virginia's biggest feats in Nicholas County is ready to make another big splash for the local economy. The 2017 Gauley Season starts this Friday (September 8th, 2017) on the same named river, an integral part of the Mountain State's majesty.
"This place is such a spectacular area," said Adventures on the Gorge president/CEO Dave Hartvigsen. "Every day we get up, all of us that work here are really grateful to be here."
Local companies have benefited greatly from the whitewater rafting event, making nearly $1 million in net sales. Hartvigsen loves seeing the economic current flowing in their direction.
"We obviously have grown a business over many years," Hartvigsen said. "We started in 1973. Now 44 years later, we're still running and business is doing well. We continue to grow and expand."
People of all ages and skill levels are expected to hit the Gauley for the next seven weekends to experience one of the top ten whitewater rafting destinations in the world. Describing it in words don't do it justice, however.
"You come out on the bottom of the rapid and everybody's cheering," Hartvigsen said. "It's really exciting and there's still multiple other rapids down the river to do. You get a chance to look up at the mountainside and see how beautiful it is."
Gauley Season goes through October 22nd. Adult prices begin at $99 and vary by date.
Rafting and rolling mountains: a local dynamic duo always meant to bring in the dough.
