Justin Hughes is charges with Malicious Wounding in connection with a fight at Southern Regional Jail that left Al Jessup with a broken arm
Officials with the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety announced on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 that charges have been filed against an inmate in connection with a fight at the Southern Regional Jail.
Justin Clyde Hughes, 26, is charged with felony Malicious Wounding. He is also facing a Battery charge, which is a misdemeanor. Hughes was allegedly in a fight with Al Jessup, known as the Ice Cream Man in Beckley. The fight happened on Saturday, Aug. 9, and left Jessup with a broken arm. Jessup was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Officials with the West Virginia Regional Jail Authority have confirmed that there was a fight at the Southern Regional Jail involving Al Jessup. Jessup was arrested on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014 in connection with child porn charges.
According to Lawrence Messina with the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, Jessup was involved in a fight with another inmate at the Southern Regional Jail. The altercation happened at 1 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9. During the fight, Jessup's arm was broken. He was taken to Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital for treatment. His current condition is not known Officials said that the other inmate was not injured. The incident is still under investigation and both men could face additional criminal charges.
Meanwhile, Jessup is also facing new charges in connection with the child pornography investigation. According to investigators with the Beckley Police Department, Jessup is now facing charges of Prostitution, Third Degree Sexual Assault and Criminal Invasion of Privacy. This is in addition to the other charges already filed, which included Child Pornography. Officer Quesenberry said that the case will go to the next grand jury following the session in September.
