Bond set at 1 million dollars for man who allegedly started Matoaka fire

Bond set at 1 million dollars for man who allegedly started Matoaka fire

A man was arrested Friday in Matoaka on Arson charges. 

Matoaka Police Chief John Sommers says they arrested Brandon Coomes for setting an apartment building on fire.


Brandon Coomes of Lashmeet went before the Magistrate today for his arraignment. Coomes was charged with entering without breaking and arson to the 3rd degree. Coome's bond was set at $1,000,000. He was unable to pay. 


Coomes allegedly started the fire in Matoaka causing about  $4,000,000 is damages and other costs involving the fire.


According to police, Coomes claims the fire started by accident, but he just failed to report it to the authorities.


Entering without breaking  is a 1-10 year sentence and arson to the 3rd degree is 1-5. 


Coomes will remain in the southern Regional Jail until his preliminary hearing within the next 10 days.
