The inaugural Mountaineer Brewfest was born when one Wheeling beer lover decided the Friendly City needed to play host to the Mountain State’s growing craft beer businesses.

Jeff Hayes enlisted the help of several friends and local businesses to make the Aug. 16 event a reality at Heritage Port, sponsored by Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack.

“It’s an opportunity for both passionate craft beer lovers and those that just like to have fun to come together and celebrate for an evening,” Hayes said in a news release. “The brewers throughout West Virginia have been instrumental in establishing this festival, and we expect more to participate in 2015.”

Participating breweries will include: Big Timber Brewing of Elkins; Blackwater Brewing Co. of Davis; Charleston Brewing Co.; Greenbrier Valley Brewing of Lewisburg; Lost River Brewing of Wardensville; Morgantown Brewing; Mountain State Brewing Co. of Thomas; and Wheeling Brewing Co., formerly known as Basement Brewery.

“We are very supportive of our local community and are pleased to help support an exciting event that will attract visitors from the tri-state area,” Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack General Manager Osi Imomoh said in a news release.

Anheuser Busch also will bring one of its two mobile Budweiser Brewmaster Tours — a 60-foot by 40-foot long tractor-trailer set up to provide a hands-on brewery — to the festival, according to Carl Carenbauer of Carenbauer Distributing.

“The Budweiser Brewmaster Tour offers visitors a unique sensory experience complete with a hot brewing zone and a cold finishing zone,” Carenbauer said. “At the end of the tour, ambassadors will answer questions while guests sample the finished beer. It will be a memorable experience.”

Several musical acts will perform as part of the festival. Tickets and details are available at mountaineerbrewfest.com.
