A Princeton man arrested in Beckley for trying to have sex with a 5-year-old girl appears in court for a preliminary hearing.
Johnnie Ray Champ, 44, arrested earlier this month by Beckley Police officers was in Raleigh County Magistrate Court Wednesday.
Beckley Police Detective Morgan Bragg testified in front of Magistrate Massie and told the court about the details leading up to the arrest.
Bragg said the Beckley woman called police last month after she met Champ on a Plenty of Fish and he expressed interest in having sex with her 5-year-old daughter.
In an attempt to have Champ arrested, Bragg said the woman agreed for Champ to come to her home.
The two exchanged a few text messages and around midnight on June 9th, he showed up as planned to her apartment.
According to Detective Bragg, police arrived on scene shortly after and took both the mother and Champ to the station for statements.
A few weeks later, police were able to seize Champ's cell phone and get a warrant for his arrest.
Magistrate Massie ruled there was enough probable cause against Champ for the case to move on to a grand jury.
Champ is being held in Southern Regional Jail on $250,000 bond.
