University of Charleston goes barefoot for TOMS "One Day Without Shoes"

Posted: Updated:

In honor of TOMS "One Day Without Shoes" global event, the University of Charleston TOMS club is asking students to participate by going barefoot all day April 15.

It is the event's second straight year and is in conjunction with the University's "Live the Mission Week."

During "TOMS Tuesday," prizes will be awarded to people who go barefoot, Yarid's shoe store will sell TOMS shoes on-site and there will be a do-it-yourself shoe styling table and barefoot "mini-games.". Also available are soccer balls made out of recycled newspaper and plastic bags, used for the pick-up soccer and volleyball games that will occur on the campus' riverbank throughout the day.

TOMS was founded on the premise that with every pair of shoes someone purchases, a pair of new shoes will be given to a child in need. The UC TOMS Club was founded in 2012 by UC students inspired by the TOMS mission.

Other events taking place during "Live the Mission Week" include:

April 14 is #IMGOLD Kickoff Day, located in front of Geary Student Union from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. In case it rains, the location will be outside Starbucks in the GSU Lobby. For Wednesday's Street Fair, students can register in teams of no more than four people to earn #IMGOLD t-shirts and decorate their masquerade masks for the Red Carpet Event on Thursday.

Toms Tuesday, on April 15, will be located outside Starbucks in Geary Student Union, MoHarv Food Court and the Riverbank from 10 a.m.-4p.m.

All the equipment for the event is made with up-cycled materials. Those participating are encouraged to bring a favorite pair of TOMS to decorate in MoHarv's Food Court in our "Craft Room."

On  April 16,  the UC Street Fair will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the Riverbank. In case of rain, the date will be moved to April 23. Students in teams of up to four can sign up to complete a "road map" of minute-to-win-it events to win prizes and #IMGOLD t-shirts. A cookout, music and prizes will also be provided.

The UC Red Carpet Event is the will take place on April 17 and will start in Geary Auditorium at 7 p.m. Mocktails will be served in the Rotunda from 6-7 p.m. In the "Masquerade Glamor" themed award show, students top off their dresses and suits with masquerade masks.

Final donations will be collected April 18 outside of the Geary Student Union Starbucks. Those who donate will receive a slice of pizza.
