Bluefield family's love for basketball lead to success

Posted: Updated:

Anthony Eades finished his high school career with a state trophy in hand.

While he was playing in the state tournament, his father Mike Eades was participating in a tournament of his own, as a referee for NCAA March Madness.

"I worked the Elite 8, I've been a stand by in the Final 4. So, I've been very fortunate to have the opportunities that I've had," said Eades.

From rivalry games like UNC vs. Duke, to Wisconsin and Arizona in the Elite 8, Eades has worked his way up the officiating ladder.

His passion for the game was passed down by his father, and he's since passed it on to Anthony.

"The first day we brought him home from the hospital there was a little basketball, little Nerf ball in his crib."

"He's taught me everything I know about basketball, everything I know, he's taught me," his son said.

After winning back to back state championships in 2013 and 2014, Anthony was named captain of Class AA all-state team.

Anthony isn't the only one in the family with two state championship titles, Mike won two years when he played for Princeton High School.

With 2 state titles of his own, the father-son challenge was on.

"After he won the first one, I was like 'shoot son, you still have one to go,'" joked the elder Eades.

Anthony accepted.

"I knew I'd tie him, especially after my junior year, after the first year we won. But I wanted to tie him, and I did."

Anthony will continue his basketball career at Tusculum College in Tennessee. His plans for after college?

To continue following in his dad's footsteps and pursue a referring career.
