U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II said Robert Fleming, 30, intended to harm the correctional officer in the June 2014 assault.

Drug charges landed two residents in U.S. District Court in Beckley recently.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Michael Harshaw Jr., 37, of Hinton, admitted he used a telephone to facilitate a felony drug offense and to possessing alprazolam (Xanax) without a prescription. He told the court he had a telephone conversation with the informant in which they set up a meeting, later selling the individual five oxycodone pills. When authorities searched his home, they found 17 Xanax tablets, containing the highly addictive alprazolam, without a prescription.

He faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $500,000 at sentencing, scheduled for June 26. The case was investigated by the West Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations.

Goodwin also said William Smith, 40, of Crab Orchard, was sentenced to one year and two months in prison for distributing oxycodone after pleading guilty in November to selling two oxycodone pills to a person cooperating with law enforcement authorities. The drug deal took place at Smith's residence in Crab Orchard, he said.

The case was investigated by the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office Drug and Narcotic Investigative Unit and the Beckley Police Department Narcotics Unit.
