Energy assistance now available

Posted: Updated:

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced the department will be accepting applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP).

Applications will be available beginning Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 and ending Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.   The federally funded LIEAP helps people in West Virginia paying for home heating bills.

In a press release, Cabinet Secretary Karen L. Bowling said, "Many West Virginia families struggle with high utility bills during the winter months and this is a great way to help them cover those costs."

You can get an application at your local DHHR office, community action agencies or senior centers run by an Area Agency on Aging.

You can also get an application online at   Completed applications should be delivered or mailed to the DHHR office located in the applicant's county of residence.

Eligibility for LIEAP is based on income, household size and whether or not the household is responsible for paying its heating bill.

Income must be at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty guideline for the household size.

In situations where a heating emergency exists, applicants must be seen by a DHHR worker.

The press release says all applications must be received by DHHR or postmarked by Jan. 31, 2014.   Applications received after this date will not be processed.   Mailing the application to any other office or to a utility company may delay receipt by DHHR and prohibit processing of the application.

The program is limited to the amount of federal funding allocated to West Virginia under the LIEAP Block Grant.   To learn more about LIEAP, call 1 (304) 356-4619.
