Penguins v. Bruins game gets too physical

Posted: Updated:

The Penguins vs. Bruins game Saturday got out of hand as the physicality of the game went to a whole new level.

Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik took a hard shot on Loui Eriksson. Eriksson went down hard but returned to the game.

Later in the period, Boston's Shawn Thornton in response to the hit attacked Orpik from behind, threw him to the ground and got in some punches before being pulled off him.

Orpik was knocked unconscious, and had to be taken off the ice by a stretcher.

"It's always my job I guess to defend my teammates but I've prided myself for a long time to stay within the lines and it's hard for me to talk about right now, I can't say sorry enough," said a regretful Thornton to the media after the game.

Orpik was able to fly home with the team and was put on injured reserve for the Penguins.

Thornton has an in-person hearing over the incident. It could result in a 6 or more game suspension.
