Greenbrier West heads to the State Championship

Posted: Updated:

While the holiday season is in full swing, the football season is about to end.

But, not before naming a single-A state champion. The Greenbrier West football team left on busses Friday to go to one of the biggest games in school history, the state championship game against Madonna.

The team was beyond excited, and their enthusiasm spread to the community.

"It's really exciting, there were people lined up all way down the road waiting for them to come by. It was awesome," said Rainelle resident Piper Redden.

While the team is taking the nearly four hour drive to Wheeling, many Cavalier fans show their support from home in Charmco.

"You can just drive through town and see all the banners and signs that people have put out and they said the streets were lined with people waiting for the busses to leave and wishing them well," said Danny Redden owner of the J&S Restaurant.

One of those signs is on the restaurant sign whose parking lot the players departed from. The restaurant is filled with Christmas cheer and Cavalier pride. Danny and his wife Suzanne Redden wouldn't have it any other way.

"It's great and it's good to do it for them, its one way to show our support," said Mrs. Redden.

The rooms hold lots of school spirit and some of the players biggest fans.

Supporters had some words of encouragement for the team.

"Bring it home," said Mr. Redden

The Cavaliers will hit the gridiron at Wheeling Stadium at 6:45 Saturday, with state pride on the line.
