Mon Health System President and CEO Darryl Duncan has won the 2013 Caperton Award for Excellence from the Wellness Council of West Virginia.
The Caperton Award is named for West Virginia's 31st governor, Gaston Caperton. He was supportive of the WCWV during its formative years, even jogging from the governor's mansion to attend the first Governor's Conference on Worksite Wellness.
The award recognizes senior managers with "decision-making" power over wellness programming and budget allocations. It honors those who communicate the message of wellness to employees, allocate adequate funding for wellness initiatives, participate in worksite wellness programs and tie wellness initiatives to business outcomes.
The WCWV noted that Duncan has demonstrated leadership in both healthier employees and a healthier community.
At Mon Health System, Duncan has supported a wellness initiative that encourages employees to be proactive about their personal health. The goal of this initiative is to have healthier employees. The initiative includes screenings, flu immunization, a health risk assessment and interventions aimed at improving the lifestyle habits of employees.
Mon Health System added Connie Sanschagrin, an employee health coach this year, to its wellness program. A nurse, Sanschagrin's role is to work with employees and their families to identify opportunities to improve their overall health.
In addition, the award recognized Duncan for co-chairing the American Heart Association's annual Heart Walk in Morgantown in 2011 and 2012.
The award was presented at the 27th annual Mid-Atlantic Conference on Worksite Wellness in late September in Davis.
