SportsZone- Geno Smith and Jets face Patriots, Concord focuses on home opener

Posted: Updated:

The Jets franchise has a new face and after Geno Smith's impressive rookie debut for New York on Sunday, Jets fans and Geno followers can't wait to see what's next for the quarterback. But, they won't have to wait long as he heads to Gillette Stadium to face some tough competition tonight.

With Mark Sanchez out with injury for the short and probably long term, Smith will continue to hold down the starting QB spot. The Jets who took the win against Tampa Bay on Sunday will face Tom Brady and the Patriots in a highly anticipated matchup.

"It's a huge rivalry, every single time the Patriots and the Jets get together it's a physical game and usually it goes down to the wire. On the road, I expect a hostile crowd," Smith said Thursday.

New England has given the Jets 4 consecutive losses including and embarrassing 49-19 loss last Thanksgiving.

Another football team that off to a good start is Concord University picking up a big win against Lenoir Rhyne last weekend.

Their home opener this Saturday is against West Virginia State University and will be their first conference game as Mountain East members.

Head Coach Garin Justice is ready play on home turf.

"It's a conference football game, it's our home opener, that's always exciting to have our own crowd. We got all the anticipation seeing what the crowd is going to be like, seeing the atmosphere and like I said it is a conference football game," Justice said.

Since Justice has taken over the program in 2011 they have won a conference title and followed up with another winning 2012 season.

It's really difficult to explain how BIG of a night it's going to be in Fayetteville this Friday. The undefeated Oak Hill Red Devils (4-0) travel north to battle the also undefeated Fayetteville Pirates (4-0) on Friday September 22nd at 7:30 at Fletcher Arritt Stadium.  As if two undefeated rivals wasn't enough, the game is also Homecoming Night for Fayetteville High School.
