SportsZone: Geno lands starting spot and HS football week 2

Posted: Updated:

NFL:

If you've been putting off joining a fantasy football league, now is the time.

The NFL regular season kicks off Thursday and one player we should expect to see this weekend on the gridiron for the Jets is former WVU Quarterback Geno Smith.

Rex Ryan announced today that Smith will get the start against Tampa Bay on Sunday.

It's been an ongoing debate on who would land the starting spot between him and Mark Sanchez and with Sanchez's recent shoulder injury it only solidified the decision.

This is the first time since 2009 that the Jets will start a rookie quarterback.

High School football:

It's week 2 of Friday Night Lights and last week Greenbrier West picked up their first win at Nicholas County.

It was a defensive battle between the two schools which ended with a 6-0 win for the Cavaliers.

The Ca vs will follow up that impressive showing with a game at Rich wood on Friday.

The 2016 season was one for the Fayetteville High School record books. Not only did the football team finish the regular season with an undefeated record (10-0), but the basketball team followed right behind them with an unbeaten record of their own (24-0).  What's even more impressive is that the Pirates' football program only had about 24 kids on the team last year.
