UPDATE: 1 dead after tractor trailer crashes off the WV Turnpike in Kanawha County



The man was traveling north on I-77 when he went airborne and flipped onto the railroad tracks in Cabin Creek.

The southbound slow lane before the first toll booth on the WV Turnpike is shut down until further notice while Hutch's Wrecker Service tries to get the truck and cargo off of the CSX tracks as soon as possible.  The company said it's able to access the tracks through the southbound embankment.

Crews will remove the truck in pieces throughout the morning.

CSX is unable to operate trains through this specific area until the mess is cleaned up.

Authorities say the man's family has been notified and his identity will be released this morning.

The accident remains under investigation.



A semi-truck crashed on the West Virginia Turnpike in Kanawha County on Wednesday night, killing one person.

Kanawha County Metro 911 dispatchers said the crash happened just before 11 p.m. on Interstate 77 near Chelyan.

The tractor trailer rolled over in the north lanes, crashed through the barrier and landed on the railroad tracks along Cabin Creek Road.

Crews had to shut down one north lane. Traffic on the train tracks was also shut down. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. The tractor trailer was carry paper according to Metro 911 dispatchers.
