If you cast your ballot on Election Day, there’s a strong chance are you did it in a school or other public building. Schools and churches in the Mountain State are the most common locations for setting up polling places. And it’s been that way for a long time.

Senate President Jeff Kessler, D-Marshall, realized lawmakers will see firsthand the effects Marcellus Shale development has had on his hometown roads while they're in the area for monthly committee meetings.

And now they will hear from the West Virginia Department of Transportation about that issue as part of an Infrastructure Committee meeting.

Committee Chairman Bob Beach, D-Monongalia, announced June 14 a meeting had been added to the agenda to discuss the oil and gas industry as it relates to roads in northern West Virginia.

"This provides a rare opportunity for legislators outside of this region to see and hear about the unique road challenges and needs," Beach said in a news release. "The oil and gas industry, while welcome and needed in West Virginia, is placing significant hardships on local roadways."

Beach also serves on the Governor's Blue Ribbon Highway Commission and spoke with Kessler about the opportunity for the meeting.

"This will give committee members a broader perspective in the ultimate legislation they pass," Kessler said. "They will see the much-needed growth driven by the natural gas industry, but also the housing issues and damage to roadways."

The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. June 20 at West Virginia Northern Community College.
