Deputies: Kidnapping as reported could not have occurred
Raleigh County Sheriff's Deputies have an open investigation into a reported kidnapping and sexual assault the allegedly happened on Tuesday, March 19.
According to a release from the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office, emergency dispatchers received a panic call from a 17-year-old girl in the MacArthur area at 4 p.m. The girl said a white man in a gray van tried to grab her. The girl told deputies that she ran into the woods, but the man caught up to her and sexually assaulted her.
Investigators were in the area only minutes after the report to 911. Deputies said they did a detailed search, but they did not find the van, the suspect or any physical evidence of the crime. Surveillance video from the area where crime reported does not support the statements given by the alleged victim.
Deputies said that while they have an open investigation the incident, as reported, simply could not have occurred.
