Concord Drops Overtime Contest at Glenville, 80-73

GLENVILLE -

The Concord University men's basketball team erased a four-point deficit late in the second half, but lost to Glenville State, 80-73, in overtime on the road Thursday night in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition.

Despite the loss, Concord (15-10, 11-10 WVIAC) is still in great position to host a home game in the first round of the WVIAC Tournament if they defeat Bluefield State on Saturday at the Carter Center.

Concord was led by senior forward Damien Tunstalle, who made five three-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points. He also pulled down six rebounds, second to only sophomore guard Thomas Brown's team-best seven rebounds.

Thursday night marked the fourth time this season that Tunstalle has scored at least 25 points. In his last five games, Tunstalle is averaging 21.2 ppg. He needs 22 more points to become the 33rd player in CU history to score 1,000 career points.

Sophomore guard Mike Boyd had another solid night offensively with 16 points, four assists and just one turnover. Sophomore forward Jordan Davis added 11 points and four rebounds.

As a team, Concord shot 43.5 percent (27-for-62) from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range (9-for-21). CU made 10-of-13 foul shots. The Mountain Lions also held a 43-38 edge in rebounds over the Pioneers (12-14, 8-13 WVIAC).

GSC shot 43.9 percent from the field and made 16-of-23 foul shots.

It took the Mountain Lions less than five minutes to erase a seven-point halftime deficit thanks in part to seven points in the opening minutes of the second period from Tunstalle as well as freshman guard Cam Shannon hitting a layup, drawing a foul and converting the ensuing free throw to tie the game at 40-40.

CU held onto its lead for the next seven minutes until Glenville State managed to move ahead 60-58 with 7:59 to play. Points were hard to come by for the remainders of the half, making the Pioneers' four-point, 64-60, lead with 4:22 to remaining in regulation more formidable than it normally would be.

Concord proceeded to step up its defense, hold GSC scoreless for the remainder of half. On the offensive end, Tunstalle made a pair of free throws before Davis tied the contest at 64-64 with a successful layup with 1:20 showing on the clock, ultimately sending the game into overtime.

However, Jamel Morris sank a three-pointer on Glenville State's first possession of overtime to give GSC a lead it would not relinquish en route to the 80-73 win.

Lamar Mallory scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Glenville State.

Concord will close out the regular season at home 4:00 p.m. Saturday against Bluefield State in the Carter Center.
