A pair of surface mines in southern West Virginia were idled by Alpha Natural Resources on Friday, May 11.
According to Manager of External Communications, Rick Nida, the Bee Tree Mine in Raleigh County and the Twilight Mine in Boone County will be idled immediately. Nida tells 59News that 130 jobs will be affected by the shut down of the mines. Those employees will stay on Alpha Natural Resources payroll through July 10. Nida said that there are some openings available in other ANR mines and employees at Bee Tree and Twilight will be encouraged to fill those positions.
Bee Tree produced High-Vol B type metallurgical coal and Twilight produces Thermal coal. According to Nida, the market for these kinds of coal has been soft, leading to the decision to idle the mines. Nida attributes the market conditions to the weak national economy and extremely low natural gas prices.
