Plea Hearing Requested for Former UBB Superintendent

Posted: Updated:

A federal judge in Beckley has been asked to schedule a plea hearing for a former superintendent at the Upper Big Branch mine charged with conspiracy.
The Charleston Gazette reports prosecutors on Thursday asked U.S. District Judge Irene Berger for the hearing for Gary May.
May is the highest-ranking company official charged so far in the April 2010 explosion that killed 29 miners in southern West Virginia.
Charges against May last month were contained in a federal information, a document that typically signals a defendant's cooperation with prosecutors.
May was accused, among other things, of disabling a methane gas monitor and falsifying safety records and using code words to tip off miners underground about surprise inspections.
