    It was a unanimous decision at the Beckley City Council meeting Monday, October 10th,  to award Crime Stoppers West Virginia $20,000 a year. The organization has been a very important tool to the community when it comes to making arrests and solving crimes. Beckley City Councilman Tim Berry said this was an easy decision, as members of city council understand citizens have been very involved trying to keep their homes safe and lock up criminals.

    The American Red Cross is teaming up with local fire departments to give away smoke detectors to people who do not have one. These smoke detectors last for 10 years without battery changes. In the mountain state alone, the Red Cross has installed thousands smoke detectors free of charge from the Sound the Alarm campaign.  And 12 lives have been saved throughout the state.

    The Raleigh County Board of Education swore in a new board member at their meeting Monday evening on October 9th. Marie Hamrick is now officially a board member in Raleigh County. Hamrick was a long time guidance counselor at Independence Middle School.  She said she is excited to begin making decisions and do what's best for the staff and students of Raleigh County.

    A public hearing was held Monday evening on October 9th to talk about concerns about the proposed closure of Crab Orchard Elementary School. Crab Orchard is on the list of schools that may be closing to consolidate into the new school, Ridgeview Elementary.  Crab Orchard Principal Rosemarie Kelly said the transition to a new school is long overdue.

    Don't be surprised if you hear more sniffling and sneezing when your out this month. The CDC reports October kicks off the flu season, and it won't end until May. But for those of you like the nasal version of the vaccine, that version of the vaccine will not be offered this year. The CDC says more than 90 million doses of the flu vaccine have been distributed, and pharmacists in our area say it's important to take advantage of the flu shot.
