Rainelle student serves as Honorary Commissioner of Agriculture

One lucky student from Rainelle was chosen as the Honorary Commissioner of Agriculture for the Day at the State Fair of West Virginia on Tuesday, August 15. And she's only nine years old!

The heart and soul of the State Fair is the agriculture and one club is keeping that tradition alive. Inside the Cecil Underwood Building is the West Virginia 4-H Club.

WVSOM Teddy Bear Clinic is big hit at State Fair

Even though food is a big attraction at the State Fair, staying healthy is also important. For more than 30 years the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine has had a clinic inside the grandstands.

WVCDL one organization at State Fair

Many organizations are represented this week at the State Fair. One of those is the West Virginia Citizen's Defense League.  The WVCDL is a 2nd amendment rights activist group. The group seeks to lobby the legislature and advance a pro-gun platform through the West Virginia legislature as well. Members pay a yearly due of $25, all money goes straight towards the cause. All members volunteer and connect virtually through Facebook. 

Car show at the State Fair Video included

Those with a love for automobiles got the chance to take part in the 4th annual car show at the State Fair of West Virginia on August 13th. Cars of all models and colors could be seen at the car show. Owners got the chance to show off their vehicles and talk about one of their favorite things, cars. Car show participant David Harris says he always looks forward to this event.

Farm to Table interactive activity at State Fair

The State Fair of West Virginia offers something for people of all ages. One attraction kids enjoy is the Farm to Table exhibit. Farm to Table is a  stimulation program run by the Greenbrier East Cross Country Team as a fundraiser. This is an attraction to teach kids of all ages how to raise their own crops and animals. The activity begins with kids planting their own seeds for crops to grow. 

4H youth recognized at State Fair

On Saturday, August 12th the State Fair recognized 4H youth today from all over the Mountain State. 56 youth from 9-21 years old were recognized as state winners at the 4H recognition of youth event. 13 counties from West Virginia were represented. This year the ceremony recognized all 4H and FFA categories. The purpose of the ceremony is to give these kids a pat on the back for all  of their achievements.  

Cattle competition one of many things at State Fair

Showing cattle in competitions isn't as easy as it may seem. In fact, preparing the cattle for show is a daily task. Olivia McHale is one of many competitors this year and she knows exactly what it takes to impress the judges. "It's an everyday thing. It's not just the night before a show you relax. It's everyday you're working to prepare for a show," said McHale. Olivia has been showing cows since she was just five years old.

If you can't get enough of the State Fair of West Virginia, then you are in luck for 2017.  Officials with the fair said they have planned for an early start next year.
